Jennifer Bowden (1993)
Jennifer Bowden graduated from Penrhos College in 1993 and now serves as the CEO of the Mathematical Association of Victoria (MAV). As an association, MAV’s primary objective is to enhance educational outcomes for students and foster the professional development of teachers. Jennifer is fortunate to lead a dedicated team of colleagues and collaborate closely with educators and professionals across Australia, maintaining a strong affiliation with the Mathematical Association of Western Australia and its esteemed educators.
Jennifer’s professional journey commenced as a primary school teacher in a small school located in the Swan Valley. This experience was an ideal launching pad for her career, and one that Jennifer holds in high regard due to her genuine affection for the role, the students and the community.
Discovering her passion as a teacher, Jennifer and her husband embarked on a new adventure in Melbourne where Jennifer’s career path led her to work in a primary school. It was there that she rapidly advanced into a leadership role within a remarkable team of mentors.
Jennifer has had many adventures, from opening the café/bar 'Yellow Bird' on Chapel Street, to raising three children, to becoming the CEO of the Mathematical Association of Victoria (MAV). We are excited to share her story with you.

Prior to welcoming her first child, Jennifer completed her Masters in Education. However, parenthood prompted Jennifer and her husband to re-evaluate their goals, leading them to open a café/bar on Chapel Street named Yellow Bird; an endeavor that proved to be an enriching journey.
Following this career shift, Jennifer transitioned into the role of education consultant at MAV, where she has remained since. During her tenure, Jennifer expanded MAV’s range of services offered to primary schools throughout Victoria. She takes great pride in her current position as CEO and continues to work tirelessly to enhance mathematics education, all while managing the responsibilities of raising two more children.
Jennifer’s greatest joy and achievement is her family. Her friends come second and “gosh it was great to see them at [our] 30 Year Reunion.”

Reflecting on her time in Year 11 at Penrhos College, Jennifer mentions the uncertainty that she felt regarding her future career path. She held lofty and somewhat vague aspirations of working for NASA.
Mrs Joan Carmalita, the career pathways advisor, saw in Jennifer the potential to become an exceptional teacher; a predication that proved to be astute. Jennifer is deeply grateful to have been guided down this path, enabling her to shape her career and ultimately influence the field of education.

A message from Jennifer
For students embarking on their journey at Penrhos in Year 7, my advice is to seize every opportunity that comes your way. Participate in Dramafest, try out for the cross-country team, or join the junior band, even if it’s just to attend music camp!
Penrhos offers a plethora of opportunities for you to explore and cultivate your skills. Whether you emerge as a champion or a team reserve, you will be in a place where you belong. Understand that some school days may be challenging and you might feel isolated at times, but by taking one step at a time you will find your way.
To the students on the brink of leaving Penrhos, I urge you to be kind to yourself. You now have the opportunity to explore the world on a grander scale, and though it may not seem apparent at this moment, you are well-prepared for this journey.

You may face the daunting prospect of exams and the intense pressure of ATAR. Perhaps you’re considering a GAP year or entering the workforce. All of these are significant milestones, and it’s your first time navigating them, so lean on your mentors and heed their guidance.
Surround yourself with remarkable individuals, make time for self-reflection and savour the incredible person that you have become.
I hold a favourite quote close to my heart. Mrs Sunny (Vickie Sunderland) used to have us recite it before exams and it has been a mantra that I have quietly whispered to myself, helping me confront countless challenging situations.
“You are calm and confident and know all the answers. Remember, you have a magical brain!”
