At Penrhos, we work closely with families to ensure every new boarder feels supported, connected and confident from the very beginning.

Starting boarding is an exciting milestone, but it is natural for both students and families to have questions about the transition. Our Paths to Penrhos program helps girls build familiarity with the College, meet staff and future classmates, and understand what life in the Boarding House will be like. By introducing students to the College community, routines and expectations early, the program helps girls develop the confidence and friendships that will support them throughout their boarding experience.

TRANSITIONING TO BOARDING AT PENRHOS

Our Paths to Penrhos program is designed to support incoming Year 7 and 8 boarders as they prepare for life in Menai Boarding House and at Penrhos. Through a series of orientation activities, introductions and online learning opportunities, the program helps new boarders feel connected to the Penrhos community before their first day. By the time students arrive on campus, they already have a sense of familiarity with the College, its people and the routines of boarding life.

Paths to Penrhos begins in the months leading up to the school year and provides opportunities for students and families to become familiar with boarding life at Penrhos, while also helping students to start building friendships with other incoming boarders. Through weekly online lessons, practical technology set-up and family engagement sessions, students gain confidence navigating both the academic and social aspects of their new school experience.

Orientation and welcome

As part of the transition process, new boarders and their families are invited to attend orientation sessions at the College. During these sessions, families spend time with key members of the Penrhos community, including:

  • Heads of Students
  • Teachers
  • Head of Boarding and boarding staff
  • College psychologists
  • Other members of the pastoral care and wellbeing teams

These sessions provide detailed information about College procedures, expectations and daily routines, while also giving families the opportunity to ask questions and meet other boarding families.

Paths to Penrhos program

The transition to boarding takes place gradually over several months, allowing students and families time to become familiar with the College and boarding community.

Incoming Year 7 and 8 boarders are introduced to the Paths to Penrhos program at the start of Term 3. This is an opportunity to meet with boarding staff, other boarders and their families. They will spend time at the school getting connected to the Penrhos IT network and with each other.

Over the course of Terms 3 and 4, the boarders will participate in weekly online sessions, technology setup and introductions to learning practices that help them prepare for the academic year.

Before the school year begins – early boarding arrival
New boarders move into the Boarding House ahead of returning students. This allows the boarders and their families time to unpack, settle in, meet boarding staff and become familiar with their new surroundings before the full boarding community returns.

When returning boarders arrive and the school year begins, new students already feel comfortable in the Boarding House and connected to the Penrhos community

Tips for starting Boarding School

Starting boarding is an exciting new chapter, and a little preparation can help students feel confident and ready for the experience ahead. Over many years of welcoming boarders to Penrhos, our team has found that a few simple steps can make the transition even smoother.

  • Stay connected before arrival: Encourage your daughter to participate in the Paths to Penrhos activities and online sessions. These opportunities help her become familiar with the College and start building friendships before the school year begins.
  • Make her room feel like home: Personal touches such as photos, favourite bedding or small reminders of home can help students settle comfortably into their new space.
  • Talk about the boarding routine: Discuss daily routines such as study time, meals and activities so your daughter knows what to expect when she arrives. A full breakdown of our boarding routine can be found in the Boarding Handbook.
  • Encourage independence: Boarding is a wonderful opportunity for girls to develop independence and confidence. Simple preparations such as organising belongings, managing a schedule or practising study habits can help students feel ready.
  • Keep communication open: Regular phone calls or messages home can help students stay connected with family while they settle into boarding life.

Our experienced boarding staff are always available to support both students and families throughout the transition, ensuring every girl feels comfortable, confident and at home in Menai Boarding House.

“One thing that has really stood out to us is how approachable and supportive the Penrhos staff are. From the very beginning, they’ve made both our daughters and our family feel welcomed and understood. Whether it’s a quick question or a bigger concern, there’s always someone willing to listen and help. That level of care and open communication has made a huge difference in helping our daughters settle in and thrive; it’s clear the staff genuinely care about the wellbeing of each student.”
