At Penrhos College, we proudly follow the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) – a globally recognised curriculum framework for students aged 3 to 12 years old.
The PYP nurtures a lifelong love of learning by encouraging curiosity, critical thinking and inquiry-based exploration across six transdisciplinary themes:
- Who we are
- Where we are in place and time
- How we express ourselves
- How the world works
- How we organise ourselves
- Sharing the planet
These themes connect subjects such as language, mathematics, science and the arts, helping our students to make meaningful links between their learning and the world around them.
Within the IB framework, our transdisciplinary Units of Inquiry and single-subject lessons are structured to deliver the Western Australian Curriculum and Assessment Outline (the Outline). While our pedagogy aligns with the IB Primary Years Programme Standards and Practices, and we participate in the ongoing evaluation process with the International Baccalaureate Organisation, we implement the Western Australian Curriculum in full. This includes using the Kindergarten to Year 10 Achievement Standards to plan, moderate and report on student progress.
The PYP also develops key attributes of the IB Learner Profile, inspiring our students to be inquirers, communicators, risk-takers and caring global citizens.
FOCUSED SUPPORT FOR PERSONAL GROWTH
At Penrhos, the PYP works hand-in-hand with our evidence-based literacy and numeracy programs, which form the foundation of every classroom experience. We place a strong emphasis on explicit instruction and ongoing assessment to ensure each child is supported, challenged and empowered to achieve her personal best.
