Our Languages program at Penrhos offers students the opportunity to study French and Japanese, providing a window into culture, communication and connection with the wider world.

Students develop skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing, while gaining insights into the cultural richness and global relevance of each language.

LANGUAGES PROGRAM

All students in Years 7 and 8 study a language. Those continuing from Penrhos’ Junior School will have studied Japanese from Years 1 to 6 and can either continue in Japanese or switch to French in Year 7. This ensures students begin their secondary language journey with confidence, curiosity and choice.

From Year 9 onwards, languages become elective subjects, giving students the option to deepen their expertise and explore advanced grammar, expression and cultural studies. Language learners at Penrhos often find that their communication skills and intercultural understanding enhance learning across other subject areas, as well as preparing them for life in an increasingly globalised world.

Learning tasks include:

  • Written communication
  • Oral communication
  • Viewing and reading
  • Listening

BRINGING LANGUAGE TO LIFE

Language learning at Penrhos is enriched by real-world experiences that bring culture and communication to life. Students can take part in biennial language tours to France and Japan, including visits to our sister school, Hakata High School, with whom we’ve shared a close connection for over 20 years. In alternate years, Penrhos hosts Hakata students – building friendships, confidence and cultural understanding. Exchange programs offer further immersion, with options ranging from four weeks to a full year abroad.

Locally, students enjoy a range of cultural activities such as restaurant outings, cooking experiences, excursions, Languages Day and foreign film festivals. Penrhos also competes in the annual Education Perfect World Championships, where Penrhos consistently ranks among the top three schools in WA, with over 1,500 schools taking part nationally.

These immersive experiences make language learning dynamic and meaningful, opening doors to the world and building skills that last a lifetime.
