Our English program at Penrhos supports every student to find her voice – whether through writing, reading, speaking or storytelling – and to engage thoughtfully with texts, ideas and the world around them.

English is the foundation for confident communication, critical thinking and creative expression. It is central to how students think, communicate and connect with the world around them. Through literature, language and writing, we foster creativity, critical thinking and confidence – building the foundational skills for life, learning and leadership.

ENGLISH PROGRAM

In Years 7 and 8, students follow the Australian Curriculum standards, receiving a grade rather than a percentage. This approach encourages students to focus on growth and experimentation rather than perfection – promoting a mindset where risk-taking, reflection and feedback are part of the learning journey.

In Years 7 to 10, students are grouped to ensure each learner is appropriately challenged and supported. Our courses are designed to help students become confident communicators who can interpret, analyse and express ideas with clarity and insight.

In Years 11 and 12, students can select the English pathway that best aligns with their interests and future goals.

Our English courses focus on developing analytical, creative and persuasive writing skills, and our Literature course invites students to read deeply, think critically and engage with complex texts.

Do we offer support and/or extension in English?

Learning enhancement: In Years 7 and 8, some students may be invited to join our English Enrichment classes. These smaller classes offer additional teacher support for students who need more time to consolidate key concepts or navigate specific challenges. Participation in enrichment classes replaces one elective subject, allowing for a more focused and supportive learning environment.

Extension opportunities: Students who show a passion or aptitude for English are supported through a range of extension opportunities, including our Reading Extension Program for gifted readers. These students are guided by our Gifted and Talented Coordinator, who works closely with English staff to ensure high-potential learners are inspired, engaged and extended in their thinking.

BEYOND THE ENGLISH CLASSROOM

English at Penrhos isn’t confined to the page. Our students are encouraged to engage with language, literature and communication in dynamic, real-world ways:

  • Each year, selected Year 6, 7 and 8 students have the opportunity to attend the Literature Centre, where they take part in a series of writing workshops with visiting authors. These sought-after experiences deepen students’ creativity and confidence as emerging writers.
  • Across all year levels, students are encouraged to enter writing competitions such as the South Perth Young Writers Award, with Penrhos students regularly recognised for their submissions.
  • Our co-curricular Debating Club provides a valuable platform for critical thinking, public speaking and teamwork, while fortnightly reading sessions in the library (Years 7–10) create dedicated time and space to read for pleasure and purpose.
  • For senior students, enrichment opportunities include the English and Literature Conference at Curtin University, cultural excursions into the city, and visits to live theatre performances when available. Authors and performance groups such as Poetry in Action also visit campus to run interactive sessions and creative workshops — recent guests include award-winning writer A.J. Betts, who led sessions with students in Years 10 and 12.
  • Students and families can also take part in occasional community literary events, bringing the Penrhos community together in celebration of books, stories and ideas. Our annual Book Week, run in collaboration with the College library, further amplifies the joy of reading across campus.
  • In Year 10, students are now exploring digital storytelling through a podcasting project — producing content that reflects Penrhos life, social issues and creative commentary. From scripting to sound design, they learn both technical and editorial skills, with selected podcasts published online to share with the wider community.
