Our Science program at Penrhos is designed to spark curiosity, encourage critical thinking and build strong foundations across the key scientific disciplines.

Students are supported to develop their understanding of the natural world and their confidence in scientific inquiry through theory, experimentation and real-world application.

SCIENCE PROGRAM

All Year 7 students start together in non-streamed classes, with ability-based streaming introduced from Years 8 to Year 10. Classes cover the full range of core disciplines:

  • Biology
  • Human Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Earth and Spatial Sciences

Students are introduced to each area through engaging, hands-on learning that helps them build fundamental knowledge and inquiry skills.

In Year 10, students rotate through 12-week blocks with specialist teachers in Chemistry, Physics and Biology, allowing them to explore each discipline in greater depth. This structure gives students a meaningful taste of senior subjects and helps them make informed decisions about their Year 11 and 12 ATAR or General pathway choices. It’s also an opportunity to experience the expectations and style of different teaching staff before selecting their specialisation.

In Years 11 and 12, students can choose from a range of ATAR and General subjects, supported by the foundational skills built throughout their Secondary School journey. In Year 11, students also take part in Science and Practice, a dedicated focus on experimental design, investigation and safety in laboratory settings – building practical skills that will serve them in school and future scientific pursuits.

Throughout these years, all students also engage in Science Inquiry, a continuous program from Years 7 to 12 that focuses on planning, conducting and analysing experiments – equipping them with the skills to think, question and investigate like a scientist.

  • In Years 7 to 10, Science is compulsory to all students.
  • In Years 11 and 12, students can select courses to suit their academic strengths and post-school ambitions.

What Year 11 and 12 Science courses do we offer?

  • Biology (ATAR)
  • Chemistry (ATAR)
  • Human Biology (ATAR, General)
  • Physics (ATAR)
  • Psychology (ATAR)

Do we offer support and/or extension in Science?

Students who are passionate about Science and eager to be challenged can access extension pathways from Years 7 to 10. These opportunities allow students to explore concepts in greater depth, stretch their thinking and take part in enrichment experiences beyond the standard curriculum. At the same time, teachers work closely with students to identify where additional support is needed and provide timely, targeted assistance to ensure all learners thrive.

All Science learning is supported by the Meg Melville Science Innovation Centre – a state-of-the-art facility featuring collaborative laboratories, leading-edge equipment and flexible learning spaces. The Centre is purpose-designed to reflect modern scientific practice and regularly welcomes guest speakers and industry professionals to inspire the next generation of scientists.

ENDLESS OPPORTUNITIES

The Science curriculum at Penrhos is brought to life through a wide range of exciting opportunities that encourage exploration, innovation and risk-taking. From stargazing with our new telescope and the rooftop robot garden, to hands-on experiences like Science Day, the ever-popular Science Fair and excursions to places like the Perth Hills Discovery Centre, students are inspired to ask big questions and think boldly.

A biennial Space Camp tour to USA offers once-in-a-lifetime STEM experiences, while our partnerships with organisations such as Curtin University connect students with real-world research and discovery. Guest speakers, immersive projects and interdisciplinary events ensure that Science is not just studied – it’s experienced, explored and enjoyed.
