Curriculum Sport

Physical Education is an essential part of the curriculum from Pre-Primary. Our program is designed to be engaging, inclusive and developmentally appropriate, offering students a wide variety of activities that build fundamental motor skills, coordination and teamwork. Through structured lessons and active play, students are encouraged to challenge themselves, develop resilience and enjoy the benefits of an active lifestyle.

We provide opportunities for our students to experience a range of sports, so they can explore their strengths and discover new interests in a supportive environment. Examples include:

  • AFL
  • Athletics
  • Basketball
  • Cricket
  • Cross Country
  • Golf
  • Hockey
  • Netball
  • Soccer
  • Swimming
  • Tennis
  • Volleyball

Junior Sports Carnivals

Each year, our Interhouse Carnivals provide a vibrant platform for Junior School students to showcase their sporting talents and pursue personal achievements. Held on campus using Penrhos’ outstanding facilities, these events unite our community in a spirited celebration of sport. With students cheered on by their peers, families and staff, the carnivals foster House pride, encourage participation and highlight the joy of active competition in a supportive environment.

  • Interhouse Swimming – Years 3- 6
  • Interhouse Cross Country – the Cross Country Carnival is a whole-school event, with our students from Pre-Primary to Year 12 participating in one carnival
  • Interhouse Athletics – Years 1-6
  • ELC Athletics – Pre-Kindy, Kindy and Pre-Primary

JIGSSA Sports

Through our involvement in JIGSSA (Junior Independent Girls’ School Sports Association), we provide engaging and age-appropriate sporting experiences that support the overall development of our Junior School students. These opportunities are designed to encourage emotional resilience, build foundational leadership and teamwork skills, introduce elements of senior school sport, and promote physical growth, social connection and positive sporting values.

Penrhos participates in the following JIGSSA events, where Penrhos students compete against students from other schools in the JIGSSA network:

  • JIGSSA Swimming Carnival (Years 4-6)
  • JIGSSA Athletics Carnival (Years 4-6)
  • JIGSSA Cross Country Carnival (Years 3-6)
  • JIGSSA Summer Games days (Years 3-6)
  • JIGSSA Winter Games days (Years 3-6)
INSPIRING A LIFELONG LOVE OF SPORT

Our Junior School Sport program is enriched by a whole-of-College approach that connects our Junior and Secondary School students. This alignment gives our younger students access to inspiring role models and creates a clear, visible pathway into senior sport. Junior athletes benefit from shared training sessions, skills clinics and events where older students demonstrate techniques, offer encouragement and actively mentor them.

These interactions help foster confidence, belonging and a sense of excitement about their own sporting journey. By seeing what’s possible as they progress, junior students are more likely to stay engaged and enthusiastic about sport, supported by a caring and inclusive community that celebrates participation as much as performance.
