After the bell rings
At Penrhos, our staff do far more than inspire students in the classroom.
They’re out in the world pursuing passions, honing talents, building communities, and in some cases, taking centre stage… literally!
From opera singers to amateur fighters, musical theatre performers, wildlife educators, sports coaches and more, the lives of our teachers and staff are as diverse and vibrant as the students they support.
We caught up with a few of them to discover what they get up to when they’re not at the College and we think you’ll be just as impressed, surprised and inspired as we were.

Courtney Weaver, Digital Literacy Specialist - Penrhos College Library
When I’m at Penrhos, I am a Digital Literacy Specialist teacher.
This means that as well as teaching Digital Technologies from Year 2 to Year 8, I support staff and students across the whole school in using technology effectively and appropriately in their teaching and learning. I also get to work on special projects such as developing our AI philosophy, and presenting at our parent information evening on how to manage devices at home.
When I’m not at Penrhos, I am a Mezzo-Soprano with the West Australian Opera.
I have been singing with the company for over 20 years. Each year we do three or four productions, with each production period lasting about one month. I mostly sing in Italian, French, German and English but in 2024 we even did one opera in Czech, and I will sing my first Russian opera in 2026! I love having fun dressing up in awesome costumes, pretending to be different characters, and enjoying some of the most beautiful music ever written being sung by incredible voices!

Raelene Knox, Administration Officer - Secondary School Administration
When I’m at Penrhos, I work in Secondary School Administration where no two days are ever the same.
My role covers attendance as well as a wide range of administrative duties. What I love most about my role is being a steady point of contact for the students who come to Secondary School reception – from helping them problem-solve small daily challenges to simply being someone they can turn to. The fast-paced nature of my job is something I genuinely enjoy, and it keeps me constantly engaged.
When I'm not at Penrhos, I coach Under 16s softball and netball.
This year, during the summer season I’ve been fortunate to work with an amazing group of girls, and I always look forward to seeing them twice a week at training and games. Coaching has been such a rewarding challenge, and it’s been incredible watching their skills, confidence and teamwork grow.
Netball is just as enjoyable, even if it does involve a bit more running! Being part of their development, both as players and as young people, is something I truly value.

Jen Datu, Creative Arts and Design Technician - Creative Arts and Design Centre
When I’m at Penrhos, I’m the Visual Arts technician.
With a background as a practicing artist, my role includes supporting the teachers and students in their projects – whether that’s preparing materials or sharing knowledge of different mediums. It’s always so fulfilling to see what the students come up with when they think outside the box. My favourite part of the job is always the annual exhibition and getting to display and install the works that the Year 12 students have been working on all year.
To see it progress from a seed of an idea to a full-blown artwork is just incredible!
When I’m not at Penrhos, my other passion is Muay Thai!
I’m an amateur fighter in the WA scene. For me, it’s always about personal growth, discipline and constantly learning to become the best version of yourself. The biggest inspiration to me are the women in Muay Thai, especially the women in my gym. We come from different walks of life, but all share the same passion. We will always uphold and push each other beyond our limits and it’s amazing to see everyone’s individual journey through this sport.

Aleisha Archer, Junior School Teacher - Early Learning Centre
When I’m at Penrhos, I teach Kindy! Every day is full of fun and laughter.
In Kindy, we learn things like social and emotional skills, physical skills and early literacy, all through engaging play-based experiences. Kindy is a world of imagination and creativity. I love following the students’ lead as their curiosity guides our learning. Kindy is a huge year for development, and it is so rewarding to celebrate each student as they grow throughout the year!
When I’m not at Penrhos, I perform in musicals!
I’ve been involved in community theatre around Perth for most of my life. I have a passion for singing, dancing and acting and have been lucky enough to be cast in several musicals. Recently, I played the lead role in Xanadu! The process was intense but incredibly fulfilling. We usually spend about three months preparing for a show, with rehearsals in the evenings and on weekends. There is so much talent in Perth, and I love getting to know a diverse range of people through the theatre community.

Sarah Mehnert, Junior School Teacher - Early Learning Centre
When I’m at Penrhos, I have the privilege of guiding our youngest learners as a Year 1 teacher.
My role is to spark curiosity, build strong foundations in literacy and numeracy, and nurture creativity. I strive to create a classroom where every child feels valued and inspired to grow. It’s a joy to watch students discover their potential and begin their lifelong journey of learning at Penrhos.
When I’m not at Penrhos, my biggest passion is dance.
I started when I was five years old and haven’t stopped since. One of the most rewarding parts of this journey has been giving back through Telethon, Western Australia’s much-loved charity event. I’ve had the chance to perform in the opening shows, from dancing with Fat Cat to sharing the stage with Manu, Kochie and Natalie Barr. It’s a fun and meaningful way to combine my love of dance with supporting a great cause.

Jenny Rule, Creative Arts and Design Teacher - Creative Arts and Design Centre
When I’m at Penrhos, I am a teacher of Foods (Specialisations), Textiles (Materials Design) and the Children, Family and Community course (Years 11 and 12).
I work in the Technologies Department and teach Years 7 to 12. I am also lucky to be a form teacher in 2025 to a wonderful group of Year 8 students.
When I’m not at Penrhos, I volunteer my time to support my old school as a member of the Old Kobeelyans’ Association.
I am a very strong believer in the importance of Home Economics as a subject and the life skills learnt within our courses. As an executive member of the Home Economics Institute of Australia (Western Australia), I am also a committed advocate of Home Economics.
Since I am passionate about conservation and our native flora and fauna, I also spend time volunteering at Kanyana Wildlife in Lesmurdie. As a member of their education team, I host a range of tours and run programs educating others on our amazing native animals.
