Brewing ideas and building skills
By Fiona Rakimov and Jerri-Lee Matthews
Associate Heads of Creative Arts and Design
Just a few weeks into a new school year and the Creative Arts and Design Centre (CADC) is thriving with every floor filled with our incredible students undertaking projects that explore a huge variety of mediums, skills and disciplines.
Our whole building has become flooded with the smells of expertly made coffees as part of our Barista program; ideas come to live in our photography studio using industry level equipment and our walls become jam-packed with fresh artworks. Listen carefully and you can even hear the hammering of our jewellery students in our dedicated jewellery workshop.
MEDIA PRODUCTION AND ANALYSIS
Our Year 12 ATAR Media Production and Analysis students are deep in the planning stages of their individual short film projects, a task that challenges them to craft meaningful stories with a clear style and purpose for a chosen audience.
A real highlight of the term was welcoming Penrhos Alumni, Megan Rundle, who works in the industry, generously sharing film storytelling advice and real-world insights as students shaped their ideas and prepared for production.
We are excited to watch our students evolve as they blend technical skill and creativity into each production phase. Their final films will make their debut at our Creative Arts and Design Exhibition in Term 3.
YEAR 10 CAFE
Year 10 Food students prepared and offered an amazing array of food as part of their Pop-Up Café projects. Opening their cafés to College staff for an hour gave students hands-on experiences in design, food preparation, project and time management as well as customer service..
It was awesome seeing students relish in the joy and satisfaction of making and sharing beautiful food created with their own hands.
GENERAL VISUAL ARTS
Year 11/12 General Visual Arts students have loved diving straight into hands-on practical workshops where they were able to immerse themselves in developing their observational drawing skills with a focus on light. Fundamental experiences like this are key to supporting their growth as artists.
You can hear the students exhaling with relief as they walk through the CADC doors because they are away from their laptops and able to engage their whole body in hands-on, physical skills.
Increasingly, our students are relishing in opportunities to experience all things ‘analogue’ and we are so proud to be able to offer and nurture our students in this way.
General PHOTOGRAPHY
In Year 12 General Design Photography, our students have now reached a milestone project that requires them to shoot, design and produce a magazine cover of their choice.
Student models, assistants, prop sourcing, lighting design and digital camera skills all come together and it's incredible to see our students coordinate their photoshoots and apply the skills they have gained throughout the years, including time management, communication and planning.
As Term 1 comes to close and students busily prepare for portfolio submissions, food tastings and finishing garments, we are excited to farewell our inaugural Food & Fashion Tour.
Students and specialist staff are embarking on a trip of a lifetime to explore Italy and Copenhagen with incredible opportunities to expand their classroom skills and knowledge.
We can’t wait to share their experiences with you all upon their return!
