Coming to Penrhos changed my life - Nahyun Kim
As a little girl growing up in her hometown in South Korea, Nahyun could never have imagined how brightly her future would shine.
At just seven years of age, she migrated with her parents to Perth, beginning a life-changing journey.
Initially, adjusting to a new culture and learning English was challenging. “In the first year of primary school, I was so afraid to say something not very well in English that I just didn't talk for a whole year,” remembers Nahyun.
Despite her shyness, it was in primary school where Nahyun’s natural talent for maths became apparent. “I always had this passion for maths,” she recalls.
It didn’t take long before Nahyun embraced an exciting new future – she was 12 years old when she received a letter from Penrhos, recognising her academic potential with a scholarship. “It was amazing. I didn’t expect it at all. It was such a big surprise – it changed my life. I never thought I would go to a private school.”
For Nayhun, the experiences and opportunities that followed would have a profound impact on her life.
Life changing opportunities
It all began with a defining moment in Year 7 when Nahyun was invited to join the Maths Mentor program, where she discovered a place to pursue her passion for maths.
“It was a lot of fun. I particularly liked the competitive aspect of it. Maths Mentor pumped me... I felt quite lucky. The [international] tours gave me time to spend with my Penrhos friends, and they offered a wider perspective on things. It was a great opportunity for exploring new countries. It was really special,” recalls Nahyun.
Immersing herself in all the opportunities Penrhos had to offer, Nayhun also participated in Arts Club, soccer, volleyball and softball.
In Years 11 and 12, Nahyun was named Dux and served as Maths Mentor Captain. This role was especially meaningful because it gave her the chance to give back – now she was the one helping younger students through tricky maths problems.
Beyond her passion for Maths, Nayhun also excelled in Physics and Chemistry and says she is grateful that the College supported and recognised her interests. “Even beyond the academic side of it, I feel Penrhos gave me the courage to try things. I felt very supported the whole time.”
During her time at the College, Nahyun participated in the Harry Perkins Research Institute program, where she and her peers were immersed into real-life applications of medical research. She also gained work experience at a GP clinic – an experience that would later prove instrumental.
Nayhun graduated from Penrhos in 2021 with outstanding achievement, earning a place on the Principal’s List and among WA’s top ATAR students. Each pin on her blazer tells a story of growth and accomplishment.
Life beyond Penrhos
After graduation, Nahyun moved to Melbourne to study Physics, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in 2024.
Today, Nahyun is studying Medicine and gaining hands-on experience through her clinical placements in hospital wards. As she spends time alongside doctors and patients, Nahyun has become increasingly certain about the path she wants to follow.
“I would love to be able to really make an impact in people’s lives. I’ve seen the difference medical teams make every day, and that’s what inspires me. I hope to give back to the community in the same way.”
Reflecting on her journey, Nahyun can clearly see the lasting impact the scholarship has had on her life. “I feel all of those opportunities, all of the amazing teachers who were integral to my education and the lifelong friendships I made at Penrhos, have really shaped who I am today.”
“I wouldn’t be where I am today if not for the donors who believed in me. Thank you for changing lives like mine.”
Help us build a brighter future.
Nahyun’s story shows the powerful impact scholarships can have. Thanks to the generosity of donors, deserving students can pursue their dreams and grow into compassionate leaders who will one day give back to their communities in extraordinary ways.
