From Studio to Stage to Stove
Every day, the work of our Creative Arts and Design technicians brings to life the vision of our College’s Create pillar, which champions innovation, self-expression and hands-on learning. Behind every vibrant classroom, intricate artwork and bustling design lab is a team of exceptionally talented professionals who blend deep knowledge with creativity, care and support.
Their contributions often happen behind the scenes, yet they are instrumental in nurturing the imagination, skill and confidence of our students. Through their expertise, they help transform ideas into tangible outcomes, whether it’s a painting, a film, a garment or a dish. Their involvement fosters a culture where creativity is not just encouraged but deeply valued.
From alumni who return to give back, to practicing artists balancing residencies with mentoring, and educators-in-training bringing their professional expertise into the classroom, this team is rich with talent and passion. We are proud to shine a light on these individuals whose work helps make our creative spaces, and the spirit of Create, truly thrive.
Jen datu
Visual Art Technician
I came to Penrhos in 2020 as a fresh Curtin art school graduate. Looking back at my time at university, I was always so bowled over by the various skills and knowledge that technicians had and the generosity with which they shared it. Being in that position now and sharing my knowledge with students absolutely fills my cup.
What does it mean to be both a teacher and an artist?
The two are deeply connected. I love working across various mediums, from installation to textiles, and I’m currently undertaking an artist residency with Next Wave (Melbourne) and an intensive mentorship with PICA’s boorda yeyi immersive arts program. These experiences not only enrich my own creative practice but also inspire the way I support students in exploring new materials, ideas and ways of thinking.
Finlay Foster
Photo, Media & Design Technician (Alum)
As a Penrhos alum (Class of 2023) and having done ATAR Design, Media and Art, I'm very familiar with the courses. I'm currently studying a Bachelor of Law and a Bachelor of IT. The skills I gained through the arts have helped me excel in internships and my current Photography and Media Technician role, where I manage over 150 cameras and continue to follow my creative passions.
Why does film hold such a special place in your role?
The media side of my role is small but by far my favourite. Watching the Year 12 short films is always a highlight, with each frame reflecting the students’ voices, unique personalities and passions. Creating my own short film was the pinnacle of my time as a student. I hope others find that same sense of self-fulfilment.
Erynn Simcock
Textiles Technician
I’ve recently joined Penrhos and am excited to bring my background in visual art and fashion into this creative space. With a childhood immersed in the arts and four years’ experience as a visual art technician, I’ve developed skills in textile and print development, garment construction, digital design and more. My graduate collection, Overgrown Realis, will feature in the 2025 WA Pulse Fashion Show.
Where do you find the most joy in your role?
I love the freedom to explore new styles and mediums and feel energised by supporting students as they bring their own ideas to life through textiles and design.
Priscilla Nimmo
Foods Technician (Alum)
After graduating from Penrhos in 1997, I completed a Bachelor of Commerce at Curtin, majoring in sports administration and marketing, and later pursued advanced diplomas in nutritional medicine and naturopathy. That’s where I discovered my true passion for food and nutrition. I’m now in my third year of a Bachelor of Secondary Education, specialising in food technology.
What drives your passion for food, nutrition and wellbeing?
Collaborating with inspiring colleagues and fostering connection and creativity has been a highlight. Nurturing a love for food, nutrition and wellbeing in young women is central to my educational philosophy. I aim to equip our students with skills that nourish both body and mind.
Stacey Currell
Foods Technician
I’ve been a qualified chef since 2010 and have worked in many kitchens across Perth managing busy services and mentoring apprentices. Now in my third year at Penrhos, I love being part of a supportive school community where I can share my skills and experiences.
What inspired you to take the leap into teaching?
Since having children, my focus has shifted. I’m now in my second year of a Bachelor of Primary Education at ECU. I feel incredibly fortunate to support students, learn from experienced educators and keep developing my own skills as I work toward becoming a qualified teacher.
