Inspiring, creating, thriving in Term 2

25 June 2026

By Fiona Rakimov and Jerri-Lee Matthews, Associate Heads of Creative Arts and Design

Students and staff returned to campus in Term 2 from Creative Arts and Design's (CAD) inaugural Food and Fashion Tour filled with exciting tales and experiences from their travels throughout Italy and Denmark. What a way to spend the Term 1 school holidays! With incredible itinerary chock full of hands-on authentic cooking and fashion-based workshops, we were all a bit envious but very excited to see the students put their learnings and experiences to use in their classrooms.

We welcomed our newest group of Year 7 students into our Textiles Studios. It never ceases to amaze us how they start the term without knowing how to turn on a sewing machine and end up walking away with a gorgeous, originally designed, handmade cushion of their very own. The students are always so visibly proud of themselves! Especially as they crave real, off-screen experiences and learning hands on skills.

Year 8 Media students learnt the art of creating specialised and super realistic special effects make up. Students used specialist make up, with each group having a kit to take turns applying the different techniques. This workshop was in preparation for their upcoming task where each production crew scripted, acted, filmed and edited their own “jump scare” scenes.

Year 10 Food Design saw students connecting with Anika, an organic farmer based in Queensland as they explored sustainable food and security issues. Being able to learn from someone on the ground with real life experience was awesome. It is so important to connect our students with successful female role models like Anika, especially in traditionally male dominated industries like farming.

We are wishing everyone a fantastic winter break full of creativity, good food and time with friends and family. We look forward to Term 3 and can’t wait to show you everything our students have been creating in our annual CAD Exhibition on Thursday, 17 September, so please save the date!
