Celebrating Term 2 Music at Penrhos

26 June 2025

by Matt Zambon, Head of Music

Term 2 has been bursting with music at Penrhos College, with students sharing their talents on stages near and far. From jazz to classical, rock to contemporary, our young musicians continue to shine, embracing every opportunity to perform, grow, and inspire.

Jazz Hits the Road: Generations in Jazz

Our Jazz Band travelled to South Australia to take part in the prestigious Generations in Jazz Festival, a spectacular event that brings together some of the country’s most promising young jazz musicians. It was a whirlwind weekend of music-making and connection, as students forged new friendships and immersed themselves in top-tier jazz. A special congratulations to the Combined Wesley/Penrhos Big Band who achieved an impressive 2nd place in Division 4+, a phenomenal result for their debut appearance at the festival!

Music at St George's

One of the most cherished events in the Penrhos music calendar took place in the stunning surrounds of St George’s Cathedral, where our students performed in the "Music at One" lunchtime concert series. The Camerata Strings, String Orchestra and Vox Choir delivered excellent performances, while Year 11 soloists Mia Tallowin (voice), Jessica Huan (violin), Victoria Yang (violin), and Anna Johnson (voice) each wowed the audience with their musical finesse. It was a privilege to share our music with members of the public in such a beautiful venue.

Eisteddfod Excitement

The Interhouse Secondary School Music Eisteddfod brought out the creative best in our students, with each performance showcasing incredible dedication and talent. This annual celebration of musical excellence highlights the extraordinary musicians within our college community. Congratulations to all performers for your hard work, courage, and outstanding performances.

Rocking the Rosemount: Penrhos Bands Light Up the Stage

From Year 6 to Year 12, our rock musicians amped up the energy at the first “Perth Young Rockers” gig of the year at the iconic Rosemount Hotel. Performing alongside other talented young bands, our girls lit up the stage with dynamic sets that had the audience singing along, clapping, and dancing. It was a real-world gig experience and a fantastic milestone for our student bands. Congratulations to all our performers for rocking it!

Visiting Artist Xani Kolac

We were thrilled to welcome the incredible Xani Kolac as this year’s Visiting Artist. A trailblazing violinist, composer, and singer/songwriter, Xani joined us in Week 9 to lead workshops and perform alongside our students. This program, ran in collaboration with Wesley College, Perth College and Aquinas College, and was a wonderful opportunity for students to be mentored by inspiring professional artists from around the globe.

Music is alive and thriving at Penrhos! Whether on tour, in competition, or performing for the wider community, our students continue to demonstrate creativity, teamwork and courage through their music.

We can’t wait to see (and hear) what they’ll do next!
