Music Highlights for Term 4
by Matt Zambon, Head of Music
As we reach the halfway point of Term 4, it’s a great time to reflect on the awesome events our musicians have already been involved with this term!
Solo Recital Evenings
Year 10, 9, and 8 students wrapped up their performance assessments over two wonderful recital evenings. Supported by families, friends, staff, and classmates, these students put on magnificent performances showcasing their superb progress over the year. Congratulations to all who performed, and well done for all the hard work you put into your art this year! We look forward to seeing your continued musical growth next year.
Year 10 Old Mill Theatre Visit
Year 10 Music students were fortunate to attend a preview performance of a brand-new, WA-original musical theatre production at the Old Mill Theatre. Preceded by a workshop with the composer and mastermind behind the exciting new show, students gained unique insight into composing for musical theatre, as well as some of the opportunities and challenges faced by WA artists today. Students also learnt about the historic Old Mill Theatre in South Perth through a talk by the theatre managers and a brief tour before the show. Our students were thrilled with the performance, and we can’t wait to see what’s next for the creatives behind Monopoly: The Unauthorised Musical!
Year 12 Leavers Celebrations
It wouldn’t be a celebration without music!
Year 12 students banded together on Flower Day, performing their very own arrangement of the iconic hits that have soundtracked their time at Penrhos. This heartfelt performance brought tears to many eyes as the students reflected on their amazing Penrhos journeys.
More performances followed on Flower Day, with the String Orchestra vibrantly welcoming the leavers to the stage with Can’t Stop the Feeling and performing Orchid, an appropriately flower-themed piece for the College.
Coltrane Jazz wrapped up their 2025 performance season with yet another stellar set at the Year 12 Valedictory Dinner. The band performed 45 minutes of nothing but the best jazz hits, helping make this final celebration for our Year 12 leavers an extra-special one! Well done, Coltrane Jazz, and a special mention to those Year 12s who took to the stage for the very last time on the night.
Year 7 Orientation Day
Basie Band and our String Orchestra gave our 2026 Year 7s a welcome to remember at their first assembly as high-schoolers on Orientation Day. It was a true showing of just how fun and rewarding it can be to be involved in these ensembles with so many enthusiastic peers in the Senior School. A wonderful final performance from both Basie Band and the String Orchestra. We can’t wait to welcome new Year 7 musicians to these fantastic ensembles next year!
Trinity College Junior Strings Collaboration
Over the past two weeks, our Junior Strings have collaborated with Trinity College’s String Orchestra for a performance at their assembly in Week 4. Penrhos students met, rehearsed, and performed alongside like-minded Trinity students over two rehearsal sessions, culminating in a beautiful combined performance. Congratulations, string students, and well done for making a positive impact and showing the courage to build new friendships and learn together in a new environment!
Our sincere thanks to all our music teachers and staff for their wonderful work and continued dedication to our young musicians. Penrhos Music continues to grow, and your work creates a truly special space in which our students thrive.
