A full and active Term 2 in Boarding

26 June 2025

by Liz Langdon, Head of Boarding

Term 2 has been a very busy and productive term in the land of boarding. The excitement and trepidation of Term 1 has abated, and things have started to settle. Everyone now knows the routines of school and boarding, plus the quirks, likes and dislikes of everyone around them. There is a certain ease and hum that starts to emerge, which indicates that all is well.

Penrhos Boarders’ netball is run across terms two and three. This year there are six teams playing as part of the Fremantle Netball Association competition. The boarders train during the week and play on Saturday. There have been mixed results so far, but everyone enjoys being part of a community competition and getting out of the boarding house for some excitement on the netball courts.

Although most boarders play netball, we also have boarders competing in a wide variety of community sports and activities over the winter months. Our second most popular sport is hockey, closely followed by AFL. Our boarders play hockey for WASPS (Wesley and South Perth Hockey Club) and footy for South Perth Stingrays. The community members are a great support to the boarders, as they pick up and take them to and from training and matches. We also have boarders that play or participate in volleyball, gymnastics, dance classes, horse events and cross-country. All-in-all it is an incredibly active boarding community.

Layered over these sporting pursuits are a range of activities organised each week by the Boarding House Recreation Officer - Brea. We encourage the boarders in Years 7 and 8 to participate in as many activities as possible and to give everything a go. Some of the activities are held with other boarding schools and they are only for specific year groups. Often the events are open to all the boarders.

Weekends can be busy and action-packed. One weekend, some students went to the movies to watch How to Train Your Dragon, while others enjoyed sitting around our fire pit. A keen group went to watch the Dockers defeat the Kangaroos at Optus Oval and the Year 7 boarders had an all-school Glow in the Dark Volleyball activity. On Sunday, all boarders had the option of going to Perth Upmarket at UWA in the afternoon and that night, a hardy group of boarders went to Lightscape at King’s Park.

Now our boarders prepare for the holidays and some well-earned time at home. Looking ahead, we are celebrating Penrhos Boarding Week in the first week of Term 3. There will be lots of events and opportunities to have some fun and showcase to the school community, what makes being a boarder so special and unique.
