The Power of Volunteering

15 October 2025

By Sarah Cudby, Friends of Penrhos Secretary and Year 12 Parent

From the moment my daughters began their journey at Penrhos College, I felt drawn to be an active part of the school community. I joined the Parents & Friends and the Auxiliary parent support groups (PSGs) to help support the College and connect with other parents beyond my daughters' year groups. It quickly became a meaningful way to contribute, engage and feel part of something bigger.

The following year, I became a Parent Year Representative – a role I remain in today. Having navigated the transition as a new Penrhos parent, I wanted to offer others the same sense of welcome and support I had received. Organising social events for our year group became a way to strengthen our parent network, helping us share experiences, support one another and celebrate our daughters’ growth together.

When my girls took up rowing, I threw myself into the Rowing PSG, serving as both a PSGC Representative, Year Representative and Secretary. From pre-dawn barbecue breakfasts to lively pasta nights, regattas and the (unforgettable) manure drive, the camaraderie of rowing parents was something special and the sense of community was second to none. It was more than just logistics – it was about bonding, laughing and building friendships.

Outside of these roles, I’ve volunteered in many ways: tying ribbons on flowers, ushering seniors at production matinees, hosting cake stalls at swimming carnivals, and even washing costumes for the Drama Shed. Right now, I’m part of a fantastic group planning Halfway Day for our Year 12s. Each act, big or small, has been a way to support the students, staff and fellow parents who make Penrhos the vibrant environment it is.

One of my favourite parts of volunteering has been supporting the boarding families and stepping in as 'Mum' when needed by transporting their daughters to and from club sports with my girls. The highlight has been, and always will be, the big hugs of thanks from them when I drop them back to Menai Boarding House. Moments like those have reminded me how simple gestures can make a lasting impact.

Currently, I hold the role of Secretary for Friends of Penrhos (FoP) and have been involved with FoP since inception in 2020, being the PSGC Representative for two years prior to becoming Secretary. FoP is the PSG behind many cherished traditions, including the famous Flower Day and Spring Lunch.

Volunteering at Penrhos has not only allowed me to give back but has enriched my time as a parent in ways I never expected. As my time at Penrhos nears its end, I can say that it has been a privilege to play even a small part in the life of the College. I encourage every parent to get involved however they can – you’ll find it deeply rewarding and will meet some truly amazing people who become friends for life.
