Our Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) program at Penrhos empowers students to explore how people, places and ideas shape the world – encouraging informed, active and compassionate global citizens.

HASS helps students make sense of the world around them. Through the study of history, economics and business, geography and civics and citizenship, students explore how societies function, how people interact with their environments, and how individuals and groups can shape change in their communities and beyond.

HUMANITIES PROGRAM

In Years 7 to 10, all students study four key disciplines, with one subject delivered per term:

  • History
  • Geography
  • Economics and Business
  • Civics and Citizenship (Politics and Law)

This structured rotation allows for deep engagement with each field and helps students build essential skills in research, analysis, critical thinking and ethical reasoning.

For the commerce enthusiasts, our Enterprise Management (EMAN) course is a popular elective in Years 9 and 10. Every year, the highly anticipated EMAN Trade Fair is the culmination of a year-long project, where students have designed a marketing plan, written their business plan and then launched their product/s to The College community.

In Years 11 and 12, students can choose from a rich suite of ATAR and General subjects to pursue their interests and career aspirations.

These subjects allow students to develop a deeper understanding of systems, structures and social trends – equipping them with the knowledge and confidence to lead, contribute and engage in an increasingly complex world.

HASS HIGHLIGHTS

HASS at Penrhos extends far beyond the classroom, offering students rich opportunities to connect their learning with the real world. From excursions and university partnerships to community-focused projects, students experience how the humanities shape lives and landscapes.

Highlights include our collaboration with Curtin University, immersive experiences like the EMAN Trade Fair, and participation in the Mock Trials co-curricular program — where students argue real cases in real courts. Budding entrepreneurs pitch bold ideas in Shark Tank-style presentations, while initiatives like the Kings Park bushfire regeneration project deepen students’ understanding of civic and environmental responsibility.
