Our Maths program at Penrhos is designed to build confident, capable problem-solvers who thrive on challenge and curiosity.

Guided by a passionate teaching team that includes WACE examiners, experienced curriculum leaders and a co-author of national mathematics textbooks, our Mathematics Department at Penrhos offers tailored support, exciting opportunities and enriching experiences.

MATHS PROGRAM

In Year 7 students begin their Maths lessons in mixed-ability classes, allowing every learner the chance to make a fresh start. This inclusive model enables teachers to assess student needs without pre-judgement and tailor support accordingly.

From Years 8 to 10, students are grouped to ensure each learner is appropriately challenged and supported. This includes the provision of extension classes to challenge advanced learners.

Student placement is based on ongoing teacher assessment and observation, ensuring every student is supported or extended at the right time and pace.

In Years 11 and 12, students can select courses to suit their academic strengths and post-school ambitions.

  • Mathematics Specialist (ATAR) – must be studied alongside Methods
  • Mathematics Essential (General)

These pathways cater for both university-bound and vocationally focused students.

Do we offer support and/or extension in Maths?

Learning enhancement: Our Inclusive Education team works in partnership with classroom teachers to offer targeted assistance to students during their regular timetabled lessons. This proactive and collaborative model has been widely praised by both students and families. Learning enhancement continues through to Year 12, adapting to meet each student’s needs throughout her learning journey.

In Years 7 and 8, some students may also be invited to join our Maths Enrichment classes. These smaller classes offer additional teacher support for students who need more time to consolidate key concepts or navigate specific challenges. Participation in enrichment classes replaces one elective subject, allowing for a more focused and supportive learning environment.

Extension opportunities: In Years 7 to 10, Maths Mentor is an in-school extension program for gifted students with targeted withdrawal from their curriculum classes, to engage in special extension classes.

Co-curricular extension: To keep everyone on their toes, our popular co-curricular program is also called Maths Mentor (it’s less confusing once you’re in it!) This after-school program supports students of all levels to explore maths beyond the classroom – not only the 'maths stars', but anyone who loves problem-solving and collaborative thinking. Led by teachers, our Year 11 and 12 students and returning alumni participate as mentors, enriching the experience for all involved.
